Delilah eased back inside to help Susanne finish organizing the fabrics. Susanne gave her a questioning look, but Delilah ignored it. What could she say? That Robert didn’t seem nearly as interested in marriage and a family as she’d thought he would? That she’d made him mad and sent him stomping off to keep company with a donkey? She might have just made a mess of things, when all she wanted was for Robert to be happy and four children to have a good father. She slanted a look at Susanne who was preoccupied with sorting the bolts by color.

And a good man for Susanne. . . . She wanted that, too, didn’t she? Wasn’t that why she encouraged the other woman to spend so much time at the store? She liked her well enough, although she had to admit she wouldn’t seek her out like this if she didn’t have an ulterior motive.

“Where’d Robert go?” Susanne dropped into a chair, abandoning the work at hand.

“Oh, he just needed to clear his head, I suppose.”

Susanne rolled her eyes. “I declare he might be too much effort.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’ll confess I thought he might still be interested in me, and with four children to raise up, I figured it was worth finding out. He’s got a good living, and he’s surely decent, even if he’s not very exciting. But I’m beginning to think he might be a little too set in his bachelor ways.”

Delilah picked up the bolt of fabric Susanne dropped and added it to the stack on the shelf behind her. “Maybe he just needs a little more time to get used to the idea. I mean you are still married . . . technically.”

Susanne flipped a hand in the air. “There’s plenty of men who wouldn’t mind that.”

Delilah felt shock but tried to school her expression. The bell on the door jangled, and she turned to offer assistance, but Susanne jumped to her feet.

“I’ll take care of it,” she said.

Delilah wasn’t sure she wanted to give Susanne quite that much leeway in the store, but she bit her tongue. Susanne sashayed over to Joe Miller, who turned red, starting with those unfortunate ears.

“How can I help you today?”

“Why, ain’t you Susanne Ross?”

Dimples. “I surely am, back in town after much too long away.” Delilah noticed she didn’t correct him with her married name. “Aren’t you Joe Miller? I seem to remember your daddy owned that big farm just outside of town.”

Joe puffed his chest out and explained that he ran the farm now, not to mention a pretty stand of timber the new company moving into town had been out to see. Delilah noticed that somehow Susanne, who couldn’t be bothered to listen to Delilah talk about store inventory, was hanging on Joe’s every word about cattle breeding and the price of raw lumber. Delilah turned back to the fabrics and did her best not to listen. Perhaps she had misjudged things all along.
